Unidentified Man Found Dead Behind Plateau Market as Authorities Begin Investigation

Residents of Pankshin in Plateau State were unsettled on Tuesday morning following the discovery of an unidentified man’s body behind the community’s Monday Market.

The remains were found in the early hours of the day, prompting residents to alert security personnel. Witnesses said parts of the body appeared to have been removed, though the circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain unclear.

Victim yet to be identified

As of the latest reports, the identity of the deceased had not been established.

Community members said they did not immediately recognise the man, while security operatives later evacuated the body from the area.

Other reports said the remains were taken to General Hospital, Pankshin, where efforts were being made to identify him.

A resident, Panshak Rogo, appealed to families with missing relatives to contact the authorities and assist with possible identification. He also urged anyone with information about the deceased or what may have happened to him to speak with investigators.

Circumstances of death still unclear

Although residents reported that the body had been mutilated, there was no confirmed public account explaining how or where the man died.

It was also not immediately clear whether he was killed at the location where the body was discovered or whether the remains were brought there afterward.

For that reason, claims about the motive or those responsible should be treated as speculation until investigators establish what happened.

Police confirmation still awaited

PUNCH reported that Plateau State Police spokesperson SP Alfred Alabo had not responded to requests for comment before its report was published.

The Guardian similarly reported that attempts to obtain official confirmation of the circumstances surrounding the death were unsuccessful at the time of filing.

Security personnel were nevertheless reported to have evacuated the remains, while inquiries into the incident were expected to continue.

Residents urged to assist identification

The immediate priority is establishing the identity of the deceased.

Community members have encouraged anyone whose relative or friend has recently gone missing in or around Pankshin to contact the relevant authorities rather than relying on social-media speculation.

Information from residents could also help investigators determine when the man was last seen and reconstruct events leading up to the discovery.

Until authorities release further findings, the cause of death, motive and identity of those responsible remain unknown.
