Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has joked about the length of Manchester City’s financial proceedings, suggesting the case could take many more years to reach a final conclusion because of the appeal process.

Mourinho made the remarks during an interview with Corriere dello Sport on Thursday. His comments followed findings by an independent commission that Manchester City had committed serious breaches of Premier League financial rules. City has appealed the decision, meaning the process is not yet concluded.

The findings examined matters covering the period from 2009 to 2018. Mourinho, now in his 60s, used humour to describe how long he believes the legal and regulatory process could continue. Rather than making a prediction about the eventual outcome, he focused on the possibility of further proceedings after the initial ruling and appeal.

Manchester City’s challenge means the independent commission’s findings are still subject to review. Mourinho’s comments therefore addressed the duration of the case rather than presenting any final sporting or financial consequence for the club.

The Real Madrid coach also discussed Carlo Ancelotti during the same interview. Ancelotti, who previously managed Real Madrid and now coaches Brazil, had asked to visit the club’s Valdebebas training facility to observe Brazilian players including Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, Éder Militão and Endrick.

Mourinho spoke positively about Ancelotti while joking about the former Madrid coach’s continued presence in photographs around the club. He described the Italian as someone he respects personally despite the humorous tone of his remarks.

The interview also touched on Mourinho’s history of disagreements involving referees. He rejected the idea that he alone was responsible for those controversies, instead referring to circumstances surrounding the clubs and periods in which some of the incidents occurred.

Mourinho’s comments on Manchester City add a high-profile football voice to discussion surrounding a case that remains unresolved because of the club’s appeal. The final outcome will depend on the completion of that process rather than the independent commission’s findings alone.
