Fela FC Thrash Future Heroes 5–1 to Lift 2026 MTN Independence Cup
Fela FC have been crowned champions of the 2026 MTN Independence Cup after overpowering Future Heroes 5–1 in a one-sided final at Fela Field in Ipaja, Lagos.
Eto led the champions' attacking display with two goals as Fela FC turned what initially appeared to be a competitive final into a comfortable victory.

Eto puts Fela FC in control
Fela FC established themselves early in the contest and eventually broke through Future Heroes' defence through Eto.
His opening goal proved to be the only strike of the first half, allowing Fela FC to enter the interval with a narrow 1–0 advantage.
The champions increased the pressure after the restart.

Future Heroes briefly threatened a comeback when they found the net to cut the deficit to 2–1.
But the response from Fela FC was decisive.

Fela FC's road to the title
The champions did not go through the tournament unbeaten.
They opened their group-stage campaign with strong results, defeating Ayobo All Stars 3–1 and Kemon FC 3–0, but suffered a 2–0 loss to Premier Ballers.
Fela FC recovered strongly when the knockout rounds began.
They defeated Junior Milan 3–0 in the round of 16 before producing another emphatic performance to beat Grace FC 5–0 in the quarter-finals. Punch Newspapers
The semi-final proved considerably more difficult.
Fela FC and HS FC could not be separated during the match, which ended goalless before Fela FC prevailed 5–3 in the penalty shootout to secure a place in the final.

Future Heroes enjoyed impressive run to final
Despite the heavy defeat in the deciding match, Future Heroes had produced an impressive campaign on their way to the final.
They defeated Trenches Kids 3–1 and Treasure FC 5–0 during the group stage, while their meeting with Martel FC ended goalless.
Their knockout run began with a 4–1 victory over Austin Tigers.
Future Heroes then edged Bravo Gee 2–1 in the quarter-finals before defeating Breeze FC 1–0 in the semi-finals. Punch Newspapers
Their tournament ended against a Fela FC side that proved too strong in the final.

Fela FC players claim individual honours
Fela FC's championship success was accompanied by two major individual awards.
Goalkeeper Korede was named the tournament's Best Goalkeeper, while teammate Sammy received the Most Valuable Player award.
The tournament's Golden Boot went elsewhere, however.
Okoye Onyekachi of Lion Heart FC finished as the competition's leading scorer after finding the net 12 times.
Toma FC of Agege were also recognised as the tournament's Best Behaved Team. Punch Newspapers
Independence Cup continues grassroots development
The 2026 tournament represented the seventh edition of an event established in 2020 as a platform for grassroots footballers in Lagos.
The previous edition was won by HS Football Club of Alimosho, who defeated Hendrix FC 3–0 in the 2025 final at the same Fela Field venue.
Previous champions listed in earlier tournament records include Omolola, Orphiel, Doch FC and Toma FC. Punch Newspapers
Tournament convener Abolaji Tiamiyu previously explained that the competition was created partly to provide young footballers with visibility and connections to clubs, agents and other opportunities within professional football. Punch Newspapers
For Fela FC, this year's tournament ended in emphatic fashion.
After surviving a difficult semi-final and recovering from their group-stage defeat, they saved their biggest victory for the match that mattered most—scoring five times against Future Heroes to finish the competition as champions.
