A 55-year-old motorist escaped without injury after his Honda was struck by a train at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos, although the vehicle was extensively damaged in the collision.

The train was travelling in the direction of Agege when it collided with the Honda, which carried the registration number EKY 902 JT. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said its personnel worked with security officers at the scene to get the driver to safety and remove the damaged car from the railway tracks.

Clearing the vehicle allowed the train to resume its journey. Traffic disruption, however, continued around the PWD area after the immediate obstruction had been removed. The wrecked Honda was subsequently transferred to security personnel as authorities began looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki commended the traffic officials and security personnel involved in the response. He said cooperation between agencies was important when emergencies affect both railway infrastructure and nearby roads.

Bakare-Oki also used the incident to remind motorists of the risks associated with railway crossings. He urged drivers to remain alert around designated train routes and warned against attempting to cross tracks when a train is approaching or already moving through the area.

The traffic authority further called on road users to observe railway safety instructions and general traffic regulations. Its message following the collision focused on avoiding decisions that could place motorists, passengers or other people around railway corridors at risk.

The Lagos incident occurred months after a separate railway accident on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor. In March, the Nigerian Railway Corporation said 26 passengers and crew members suffered injuries after an incident near Asham Station. NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa said a loud sound was heard when part of the train formation collided during that journey.

No injury was recorded for the driver involved in the latest Lagos collision. The main confirmed damage was to his vehicle, while security personnel retained the car as part of the follow-up investigation into how the crash occurred.
