Child Dies After Passenger Bus Overturns in Awka

A commercial bus travelling from Nnewi to Enugu overturned in Awka, leaving an eight-year-old passenger dead and several others injured, according to the Anambra State Fire Service.

A road accident involving a commercial passenger bus in Awka, Anambra State, claimed the life of an eight-year-old passenger on Sunday, October 4.

According to the Anambra State Fire Service, the vehicle was travelling from Nnewi towards Enugu with 14 people on board when it overturned near the Anabel Event Centre.

Emergency officials said they received a distress call at about 3:30pm and deployed responders to the location. The team helped remove passengers from the vehicle, secured the area and supported the evacuation of those requiring medical attention.

The young passenger did not survive the incident. Other occupants sustained injuries and were taken for treatment, although the Fire Service did not disclose how many people were hurt or provide updates on their conditions.

Officials said the vehicle was damaged in the crash, but no fire was recorded. Emergency personnel remained at the location while measures were taken to make the area safe and prevent further incidents.

The response operation ended at about 5:45pm after the scene had been secured.

Following the crash, the Fire Service urged road users to exercise caution, remain attentive behind the wheel and avoid excessive speed. Its statement did not specify what caused the vehicle to overturn.
